ABOUT ME;
| Pearl Ollie has been an Artist and Musician for the greater part of her life. She has taught music and art in private and public institutions for many years. A Performer, Conductor, Session Musician, Songwriter, Vocal Instructor and Coach, Pearl has worked with many musicians. Her instruments, other than her voice are percussion instruments, such as conga, timbales, and include the piano. Using rhythms, she produces her music for her vocals, writing many songs. Art has been a major part in her life as well. Balancing the two, she finds one muse helps the other by freeing her spirit to produce both art and music. Pearl graduated from High School with art and music awards. She immediately attended an Art Institute “Society of Arts and Crafts” in 1971. The institute has been renamed “The Center for Creative Study”, in Detroit, Michigan. Returning in 1980 to study Sculpting as a major, she continued to create more art. She attended Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan for piano instruction and synthesizer techniques learning to write sounds for a variety of electronic keyboards and learned use of PA equipment. Pearl has had private instruction as well. She has sung in many recording studios for her own music as well as on other musician’s music. Working with some of her vocal students, Pearl would take them into the studio and coach the student during recording. Attending their live performances, she would watch the students “in action”. Pearl has worked with her students and other bands with her help on stage, where she would perform with them and guide their vocal notes for harmonies until they were comfortable enough to perform with confidence. In private studios, Pearl works with bands creating videos, teaching them performance techniques, appearance and overall sound. Live performances were video taped as well, providing the band with feedback to obtain a more polished look and sound. As an Artist, she has created many works of art. Putting on demonstrations, art shows and instructing, she has been involved in art all her life. Currently, she is an instructor at the Merritt Island Library, Central Brevard Library and has in the past instructed at Cape Canaveral Library, Freedom 7 at Cocoa Beach Country Club, Central Brevard Art Association and her own studio’s. She also has taught at Charter Schools, (K-8), Axis Music Instruction Studio (Southfield, Mi.), Art in Nahant (her own school in Nahant, Ma.), public and private schools. One of her favorite experiences was teaching painting in Aups, France for a month with students who came from all over the United States. She has done Make-Up Art and Costume Design for many years working with TV, theater groups and even Make-Up and Costumes for a “B” rated movie called Chameleon Street filmed in Flint, Mi. Pearl has painted signs and murals on many buildings and sculpted original statues for several companies that have reproduced her work. She continues to work on book illustrations, murals and paintings for many different people. Some of
the art projects she has recently worked on are; Pearl has illustrated a coloring book for PASA (Pan African Sanctuary Alliance) on the story of chimpanzees. The book is now being distributed around villages in Africa as an educational tool to help in the preservation of chimpanzees. A fun project was a 20’ Giraffe House, which was on display at the Brevard Zoo over Christmas of 2007 until Jan 2008. The house was one of several Animal Houses of the Imagination. The body was constructed of wood, chicken wire, canvas, paint and the house was a frame built from metal poles. She had help from her artist friends to complete the project and deliver and set it up. Painting of Max the rhino was auctioned off in a live auction for a fund raiser at the Brevard Zoo. Max actually had a hand in on the final part of the painting using an original footprint of the rhino. The footprint was added on to the final work. Max’s zoo keepers worked very hard to train Max in lifting his leg for several weeks preparing him for the footprint. When the time was right they painted his foot and let him drop it on canvas to get his signature. I was only allowed to meet with Max but for fear of his actions they suggested that I not be present for the actual painting of the footprint. I am presently working on illustrating a children’s book written by Linda Wagner called Lady Flatterley, with the help of Jerry Hanzl’s artistic rendering and real skies and lay out of the book. The story is about a cute little caterpillar that turns into a butterfly. Another
children’s book I have been working on illustrating now for
several years with author Beth Armstrong is a book about gorilla’s
called The Bongo Story. It is a true story of a family of silverback
gorillas who were living at the Columbus Zoo and were the first known
gorillas that were able to rear a baby in captivity. Beth was their
keeper and it is a heart warming story about this family of silverback
gorillas. Thanks to the Columbus Zoo for the consent to use the actual
photos and video of the gorillas to work on most of the paintings.
